Our first port was Ketchikan on Tuesday morning. After looking into several excursion options, we ultimately decided to do our own thing. Our group split in half. Ralph & Shirley and Matt & Karen and ourselves opted out of the fishing excursion. A big part of that for us was that it would take the entire day = no time to explore Ketchikan. Mark wasn't feeling enthusiastic about paying a large amount of money to fish for big salmon since he has done that before and I wasn't feeling enthusiastic about spending an entire day on a fishing boat.
We had read really good things about Rainbird Trail. We took a taxi to the trail head and spent a couple hours getting lost in the beauty.
Matt and Karen joined us on the hike and we met up with Ralph and Shirley for the second part of the day.
It was so lush and a great way to experience a small piece of Southeast Alaska's rainforest.
It was the first time we had cell service since boarding the ship on Sunday and my phone was blowing up with texts on my family thread. I learned that my parents who were with the two younger girls had gone home early due to my mom getting sick. Everything worked out okay, but it definitely had me stressed!
We met the parents at the dock and then took a bus to Totem Bight State Park.
The park sprawls 33 acres of Native American totem poles and a authentic Clan House. You can pay for a tour or do the self guided option. We inadvertently got on the heels of a paid tour and had some good laughs about the tour guide Karen trying to lose us.
It was a pretty fascinating place ..... worth the trip for sure.
We ended up exploring the town with Ralph and Shirley. Somehow we "lost track" of Matt and Karen [or they lost track of us]
Creek Street is a historic boardwalk perched on pilings along the banks of Ketchikan Creek and is about the coolest thing ever.
I insisted we try the infamous Alaska Fish House. It lived up to it's reputation!
I think Ralph & Shirley really enjoyed the Fish-n-Chips despite their insistence that they would just eat back on the ship.
We loved our day in Ketchikan. It was a great introduction to Alaskan ports.
