Temple Fork Sawmill

We headed up to Logan fairly early Monday so we could have the day to hike and look around. Mark picked a hike for us in Logan Canyon. Temple Fork Sawmill is about 5-6 miles round trip.

While I was still getting things together back at the car, these corralled horses {but obviously free to roam that day} started making their way toward me. Pretty soon they were surrounding the van and I literally couldn't open the door. Kars found it amusing:)

 This guy stayed to visit for a while.

 We missed the turn off and went much further up the canyon than we needed to so by the time we made it to the trail head it was afternoon. It was hot and dry ... around 95 degrees.

Most of the trail is pretty open. 

We stopped to sit under this shady bridge for a while and soon found the water too 

tempting in the dry heat

Kars spotted this canister which we soon realized was a Geocache. We left one of our Caramel Apple "hiking" suckers for someone else to find.

 The last half mile or so goes up into the trees a little. It was a nice break from the sun but it also meant uphill in the heat

We arrived at the site and discovered some cool history. The sawmill was built in 1877 to provide lumber for buildings in Logan {primarily the Temple and Tabernacle}. The road from Logan to Temple Fork was built about four years before the mill closed in 1883.

  The mill burned down in 1886. Some of the equipment was salvaged, 

but some pieces are still there at the site.

Pretty beautiful hike despite the heat. 

Even better when you get to experience some history while you're at it.
